NIT manipur started its first session with the three branches of Engineering-Electrical & Electronics Engineering, Electronics & Communication Engineering and Computer Science & Engineering. It is presently functioning in its temporary Campus at Takyelpat, Imphal under the mentorship of NIT, Agartala. The institute has acquired 138.2 hectares of land in lash green areas of Langol, Imphal.
The institute has the National status at present. Presently there is an intake of 90 students per year out of which 50% seats are reserved for the students from Manipur and the rest 50% seats are reserved for the students from the other states of India.
Following the principle that the key to excellence of any Institute lies in its bright student, the institute draws best talents from across the country through a cut-throat admission procedure which includes the Common Engineering Entrance Exam(CEEE) conducted by IITs and CBSE, effective from year 2013. The core aim of the institute is to infuse the students with diverse personalities along with a sense of co-operation which it done by encouraging the students to play a pro-active role in different affairs of institute. The curriculam facilitates a practical realisation among students fraternity about importance of management & enterprenership in today's shrinking world.
NIT Mapnipur was established in 2010 by Government of India and and bestowed with the status of deemed university by Ministry of Human Resource & Devepolment. The college started its classes in 2010 and at present offers undergraduate cources in CSE, EEE & ECE. Identified as a centre of excellence by Govenment of India, the institute constantly keeps on innovating itself to meet the demands of industry.
